Ban news

# Grok has stopped showing porn to UK users, and the law did not make it

The AI chatbot's companions will no longer have sexual conversations with people in the UK. Ofcom secured the change by talking, because the Online Safety Act has gaps where chatbots are concerned.

Ofcom said on 14 October 2026 that SpaceXAI, the company behind the Grok chatbot, has stopped people with UK IP addresses viewing, generating or sharing pornographic content with Grok's image tools, in the app or through links. That is from [Ofcom's update on its X investigation](https://www.ofcom.org.uk/online-safety/illegal-and-harmful-content/ofcom-update-monitoring-xs-response-to-hate-and-terror-content-and-grok-investigation-latest).

The same update says Grok's companion chatbots, including one called "Ani", have been restricted so they cannot have sexually explicit conversations with UK users. Ofcom says it will keep monitoring how the restrictions are applied.

Ofcom says these changes followed its "engagement" with SpaceXAI. It has said since January that it cannot investigate images created inside the standalone Grok service, because of "gaps in the way chatbots are covered under the Act".

X itself has changed too. Ofcom's evidence-gathering found that in some circumstances, age-gated pornography on X was still reachable by accounts that had not been verified as 18 or over. X has since made changes so that content labelled as pornography is consistently restricted for any account that has not completed age assurance through X's own methods.

Because of that fix, Ofcom has narrowed its investigation into X, opened in January after reports of Grok being used to make sexual deepfakes of real people, including children. It will now focus on how X handles illegal content and user reports, while continuing to watch its age checks.

X is one of the platforms the government has named for the [under-16 ban](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/social-media-to-be-banned-for-under-16s-in-landmark-government-move-to-givekids-their-childhood-back), expected in spring 2027. Until then, X's own age checks decide which accounts can see content labelled as pornography.

What this means for you

If your teenager uses Grok, its image tools and companions should now refuse sexual content in the UK. Ofcom describes that block as based on a UK IP address, which is a check of location, not of age, so it is worth knowing which AI apps are on their phone.
