# WhatsApp has added parental controls, and they stop at the messages

Parents can lock who sees a teenager's profile and who can add them to groups. They cannot read a single chat.

WhatsApp announced optional parental controls for teenagers on 30 September 2026, letting a parent set a teen's privacy settings and lock them with a parent-set PIN. In [WhatsApp's own words](https://blog.whatsapp.com/new-controls-to-help-parents-guide-their-teens-on-whatsapp?lang=en), a teen who wants to relax any of those settings needs "their parent's approval via a parent-set PIN".

The settings a parent controls are who can see the teen's profile photo and who can add them to groups. Parents are also notified when their teen joins or leaves a group, or when a group they are in "grows meaningfully in size". WhatsApp gives no number for that.

Beyond groups, parents can choose how their teen uses Channels (the one-way broadcasts from organisations and public figures), whose Status updates they see and who sees theirs. They can also switch the built-in Meta AI assistant from its default 13+ setting to a stricter "Limited Content" option.

What parents do not get is the conversation itself. WhatsApp says a teen's messages and calls stay protected by end-to-end encryption with the controls on, and the [BBC reports](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm986x65we88o) that WhatsApp has made clear parents will not be able to see the messages their teen sends and receives. The controls are optional, and parents can change or switch them off at any time.

This matters more because of where WhatsApp sits in the ban. The government has said it does [not intend messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/social-media-to-be-banned-for-under-16s-in-landmark-government-move-to-givekids-their-childhood-back) to be included, so an under-16 will still be able to use it after the ban starts. WhatsApp's minimum age in the UK is 13, [the BBC notes](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm986x65we88o).

WhatsApp's post gives no rollout date and does not say which countries get the controls first, so they may not be on your child's phone yet. Its [help centre page on parental controls](https://faq.whatsapp.com/995969869955972) is where setup instructions are published.

What this means for you

If your child is 13 or over and uses WhatsApp, the two settings worth locking first are who can add them to groups and who can see their profile photo. Neither lets you read their messages, so the group-chat conversation still has to happen at home.
